Consult, Chapter 7/?

March 24th, 2011 (01:12 am)

Title: Consult
Author: NiiceLaady
Pairing: House/Cameron
Summary: In the indeterminate future, after Huddy has run its course, House seeks to recapture the past.
Rating: PG (so far). Not ruling out more adult content in later chapters.
Spoilers: Season 7 to date, including the events of "Out of the Chute" and "Fall From Grace."
Disclaimer: I'm not Fox. I'm not David Shore. I'm not Harry and I don't own any bad hats. This is a labor of love and I'm laboring for free.

"About Cuddy," she repeats, and her face falls. "You just realized you're still in love with her. Oh, House-"

He stops her with a finger to her lips.

"Let me rephrase that," he says. "I need to talk. You need to listen.

"I told you this afternoon: Cuddy and I are over. Now I need to tell you why. And once you know, there's a good chance you'll be the one calling a halt to this. But if that's going to happen, I need to know it now. Got that?"

She nods and whispers, "Go ahead."

He tells her about Cuddy's cancer scare and how it terrified him to the bone, keeping from being at her side when she needed him most ... until he succumbed to chemical courage. He considers telling her about the hotel, the hookers and Domenika, but he decides to save that for another time. On the off-chance there is another time.

She's been listening intently. Whatever his words are making her feel, her face isn't showing it. "So ... Cuddy's OK?" she says at last. "No cancer?"

"No cancer," he says. "She's fine."

"But you're not."

He shakes his head. "I told you I didn't come here today expecting anything -- certainly not a second chance with you. But for a few hours I deluded myself into thinking I'd been given one.

"But now that you know how I bought myself a spot in the Bad Boyfriend Hall of Shame ... I'll understand if you want to call this off. Whatever 'this' is ... or was."

He looks away, eyes stinging, and wonders briefly if she'll believe him if he lies about a cat allergy.

"House, look at me," she says.

"I-I can't," he answers, his voice husky. "Give me a minute."

"OK. Then just listen. House, what you just told me ... it doesn't change anything. I still want to try to make ... something happen with you."

"You are insane."

"Takes one to know one," she teases. "And you have a note from your doctor.

"But you're not delusional. We have been given a second chance. You came here because you had regrets. We don't take this second chance, and all you're going to leave with is ... more regrets.

"Oh, and what you did -- or didn't do -- for Cuddy? Doesn't make you a bad boyfriend. It makes you a flawed human being. And last time I checked, that's the only kind there is."

House is silent for a few moments, digesting her words and remembering a certain hotel, a balcony, a pool and a thoroughly terrified Wilson.

He decides to jump.

Turning back to face her, he takes her hand.

"Is it too late to order dessert?" he asks.

She smiles and leans in for a kiss. "Never too late," she says softly, before their lips meet.

Chapter 8: Dessert is served.

Aww..vulnerable House. I love it ;) And I'm glad Cameron is giving him a chance and that she wants to.

House/Cam

Thanks! I had to get this one out there, stat, because everyone who commented on chapter 6 was apparently fearing the worst. "Dessert" will probably be served tomorrow night.

House/Cameron cane stop

Hmm. Well, I doubt Cameron would care about the hookers. House wasn't in love with Cuddy and that whole mess-up "relationship" couldn't withstand anything. House seems sincere about Cameron and did find her. :)

House/Cam

She wouldn't, which is why he didn't bother to get into it. He figured if anything was going to be a dealbreaker for Cameron, it would be his failing Cuddy, not the subsequent hooker binge. And he *did* allude to his "rebound girls" earlier. This was more a case of "let's not bother going there right now."

Thanks for reading and commenting. More soon!

You've read my stuff, right? I always give them a happy ending. Well, there were those two fics where I killed House, but still ... . ;-) Thanks for reading!

Eyes Say It All

I love how you're weaving the current events of the show into this story, and how you related the jumping into the pool scene to House jumping into a relationship with Cameron. (Although it could hardly be considered "jumping" in after all this time, right?) And of course Cameron isn't deterred by House's flawed way of dealing with Cuddy's illness. She knows him better than anyone and knows that when it really matters (ie, when he's with a person who really matters), he won't back down.

Anyway, what I'm saying here is that I love this story, and I can't wait to see what they have for dessert ;)

Thank you! I actually disagree that House wouldn't do the same thing if it were Cameron in that situation ... just that she would understand and forgive him ... if she even considered it something that needed to be forgiven.

I'm glad he told her as much as he did - it kind of clears the air. And I'm not surprised at her reaction.

Thanks. I'm sure he'll share more soon, but that was enough for now. BTW, dessert is served!
